Name what you are thanking them for.
Start directly: “Thank you for…” Then describe the thing they did. It might be a gift, practical help, a patient conversation or years of making you feel welcome. If you have several things to say, choose one to anchor the letter.
For a physical gift, mention how you are using it. For someone’s time or support, recall a moment that shows you noticed. You don’t need an elaborate introduction before the thank you.
Explain the difference it made.
This is the part people often leave unsaid. Tell them what happened on your side of the gesture. “You bringing dinner meant we could sit together for an hour” says more than “That was so generous.”
Keep the focus on appreciation rather than repayment. You don’t have to promise an equally large favor or turn the letter into an account of everything you owe. Let them receive your thanks without another obligation attached.
Close in the voice they recognize.
A simple “I’m glad I got to tell you” can be enough. If it fits your relationship, add a memory you hope to make together. Sign with your usual name, nickname or closing. Don’t force a formal tone onto a letter to someone who knows you well.
If your thanks is overdue, one sentence can acknowledge it: “I’ve been meaning to write this for a while.” Then move on to what matters. Read it once for clarity and check their name before sending. The letter does not have to be long to be worth keeping.
A little inspiration.
Dear Jo, Thank you for sitting with me after everyone else had gone home. You didn’t try to make the evening better with a speech. You made tea, stayed, and let it be a difficult day. I remember that more than you probably know.
An example of moving from a specific gesture to its meaning. Use your own experience and words.
Make the next words yours.
A photograph can add another piece of the memory, but words alone are enough. Make a private letter with your own text and signature, review the folded design, and choose a US recipient when you’re ready to send it by post.
